History of the Eiffel Tower

The construction of the Eiffel Tower began on 28 January 1887 and was completed on 31 March 1889. At that time, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest tower in the world. 18,000 iron parts and 2 million nails were used in the construction of the Eiffel Tower. Three years later, in 1886, a wonderful fair was organized in Paris at the World Fair organized by the Exposition Universal Company. X Position Universal Company said that this fair will be organized in 1879 on the completion of the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. A huge gate will be made for entry to this fair. 

A competition was organized to design this gate. More than 100 people sent their designs in the competition, but the one who was selected to make this gate was Alexander Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel was a French architect by profession. 

Two of his engineers also helped him in designing the Eiffel Tower. The work of making the gate started in the year 1887. During that time, people of Paris also protested against its construction. 

They felt that the structure of the Eiffel Tower would spoil the beauty of their city, but despite their protests, till 1930, the Eiffel Tower was considered to be the biggest structure in the world.
