The Salzkammergut is a breathtaking area with alpine and subalpine rivers and lakes, deeply incised valleys, undulating hills, and rough, steep mountain ranges reaching to almost 3000m. A large portion of the area is uninhabited wilderness, and even in areas that receive a lot of tourists, like the Wolfgangsee and Mondsee, you can always find remote spots with still, glassy waterways that offer countless opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, or simply relaxing on the shore and skimming stones. The most magnificent of the lakes is undoubtedly the well-known Hallstätter See, which is surrounded by towering mountains that provide excellent hiking opportunities.
